Read to dream

Get books to children in Uganda so they can #readitpossible

Give a Dream today

Why give?

  • Access to a library in the early years of schooling doubles the amount a child reads.

Early reading for pleasure improves brain and cognitive development, increases empathy, and improves mental well-being.

  • Children finish a book with greater motivation and satisfaction when they have chosen it.

Giving a school a library allows children that choice and helps them develop life-long reading habits.

  • Reading enjoyment is more important for children’s educational success than their family’s socio-economic status.

Meaning giving children books is a simple, cheap way to raise educational standards.

  • All studies have shown positive links between the amount and frequency of reading, and comprehension, writing and language skills.

Reading for pleasure has also been linked to improved youth attention, reduced stress and more thinking and creativity.

  • Stories offers representation that can be part of identity formation - storytelling is part of our evolutionary history.

Giving children books gives them a chance to learn about and believe in something bigger then their world. It gives them bigger dreams.

  • Reading fiction contributes to a child’s understanding of and orientation in the world. It’s not an escape from reality but a way to understand it.

It allows them to read and dream of what’s possible #readitpossible (Sources)

 FAQs

  • No, we don’t send textbooks. We want children to fall in love with reading and adopt a life long reading habit. That is much more likely with access to fiction books that tell inspirational and exciting stories. We are champions of Reading for Pleasure, which means providing books that children don’t want to put down.

  • Read to dream doesn’t send schools second hand books. New books are stronger and will last longer. Additionally, giving a child access to new books creates a send of pride and ownership to read and care for the book.

  • Outside of buying books and furnishing libraries - none. The founders have full-time jobs and do this on the side. Driven by their own love of reading and motivation to change lives through stories, this is a passion project with no financial overheads.
